Introduction
The Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) is a compact smart display built around Alexa voice control. Its 5.5-inch screen provides a visual layer for information that would otherwise be delivered through audio, including weather, news, song titles, timers, compatible camera feeds, and video calls.
This model is designed for users who want an accessible smart home hub without dedicating significant counter or shelf space. It also adds improved audio performance, with deeper bass and clearer vocals than earlier versions, while retaining familiar Echo features such as smart home control, streaming, photo slideshows, and privacy controls.
Typical Use Cases
Bedside Assistant
The Echo Show 5 is well suited to nightstands. Users can set alarms and timers, check the weather, view reminders, listen to music or podcasts, and control compatible smart lights using voice commands or the touchscreen.
Kitchen and Home Organization
In the kitchen, the display can show timers, weather updates, music controls, and supported visual information while leaving both hands free. Its small footprint also makes it practical for desks, entryways, and office shelves.
Smart Home Control
The device can control compatible lights, thermostats, cameras, and other smart home accessories. Support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy Mesh, and Matter helps it fit into a broader connected-home setup, although compatibility depends on the individual accessory.
Video Calling and Home Monitoring
The built-in 2 MP camera supports video calls with compatible Alexa devices and the Alexa app. It can also be used for Drop In, viewing compatible camera feeds, and checking on family members or pets. A physical camera shutter provides an immediate way to block the camera when it is not needed.
Music and Casual Video Streaming
The Echo Show 5 supports services such as Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video. The screen is convenient for browsing visual content, viewing song information, or watching short videos, while the speaker improvements make it more capable as a compact audio device.
Performance in Each Scenario
Everyday Voice Assistance
Alexa responds to common requests such as setting timers, answering questions, creating reminders, checking the weather, and controlling compatible devices. The screen adds useful context by displaying results, controls, or visual information rather than relying exclusively on spoken responses.
Audio Playback
For its size, the Echo Show 5 delivers a fuller presentation than a basic compact smart speaker. The deeper bass and clearer vocals are useful for podcasts, spoken responses, and casual music listening. However, its small enclosure cannot reproduce the room-filling low-end or stereo separation of larger speakers.
Display Use
The 5.5-inch display is clear and useful for glanceable information, controls, and video calls. It works best when positioned nearby, such as on a nightstand or kitchen counter. The limited screen size makes it less comfortable for long-form video viewing, detailed recipes, or viewing content from a distance.
Video Calling
The camera provides a convenient way to stay in contact with friends and family using compatible Alexa devices or the Alexa app. Video quality is appropriate for casual calls, but the modest resolution and compact screen are better suited to personal communication than professional conferencing.
Smart Home Management
The Echo Show 5 provides a straightforward interface for compatible smart home devices. Voice commands are the primary control method, while the touchscreen can provide additional visual access to supported devices and camera feeds. The overall experience is strongest for households already using Alexa-compatible products.
Privacy and Security
Privacy features include a microphone and camera off button, a built-in camera shutter, streaming indicators, and options to review or delete voice recordings. These controls make it easier to limit sensing and recording, although users should still review Alexa privacy settings and connected-device permissions during setup.

Limitations Across Scenarios
- The small screen is not ideal for extended video watching or detailed visual content.
- Audio performance is improved but remains limited by the compact enclosure and mono-style form factor.
- Many smart home functions depend on compatible accessories and account integrations.
- Video calling is designed for casual use rather than high-resolution professional meetings.
- The device requires a constant power connection and is not intended for portable use.
- Privacy-conscious users may need to spend additional time reviewing Alexa settings, voice history, and connected services.
- The display may feel cramped when showing information that would benefit from a larger screen.
Verdict
The Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) is a capable compact smart display for users who want Alexa assistance, basic smart home control, improved small-room audio, and video calling in a space-saving design. Its strongest qualities are convenience, easy placement, useful glanceable information, and a practical set of privacy controls.
It is a good fit for bedrooms, kitchens, desks, and entryways where a larger display would be excessive. Buyers who prioritize immersive music, extended streaming, detailed recipes, or long-distance viewing should consider a larger smart display or dedicated speaker system. For everyday reminders, timers, casual entertainment, communication, and Alexa-based home control, the Echo Show 5 offers a balanced feature set in a compact format.
